Confusion about ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ labels adding to food waste woes

Tom Elliott

Confusion about the difference between “best before” and “use by” labels on food is contributing significantly to Australia’s food waste issues, says the founder of Oz Harvest.

Ronnie Kahn told Neil Mitchell many people incorrectly threw out food after the “best before” date when the food product was still able to be used for months, under the impression it meant the same thing as “use by” labels.

“That is a huge cause of food waste,” she said.

“There is so much we need to do.”
