The consumer watchdog has shared tips for Australians impacted by the massive data breach.

Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Gina Cass-Gotlieb, says those affected should act quickly.

“Tell wherever you’ve got an account with a bank … and also to your superfund and just inform them that you’re a victim of this data breach and ask them to put a flag on your account and ask for their advice about what you can do,” she told Neil Mitchell.

“It’s also worthwhile setting a low transaction limit on your account.”

Ms Cass-Gotleib also warned Australians to be on the lookout for sophisticated scams.

“You’ll suddenly start to receive texts that say ‘Hi Neil, Hi Gina, Hi Andrew’ and say happy birthday, for instance,” she said.

“That is really going to confuse people.”
