Motorists who park in the inner suburbs and catch a train or tram into the city are about to be forced to cough up for car parking.

The increase in the parking levy will apply in areas such as Richmond, South Yarra, Windsor and Prahran.

Infrastructure Victoria wants to expand the congestion levy, under which owners of off-street private and public car parking would be charged $1000 a year, per parking space.

Acting Lord Mayor Aaron Wood told Tony Jones the cost will be passed on the motorists.

“The parking levy is set to increase,” Cr Wood said.

“How much do you think?” Tony asked.

“Oh I’m not sure.”

“The City of Melbourne itself makes about $7 million from that state set parking levy, so we don’t have control over the parking levy,” he said.
