COUNCIL WATCH: Monash mayor Geoff Lake has debated with Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive the core business of councils.

Tom Elliott believes councils should stick to roads, rubbish and rates.

But Cr Lake, also a board member of the Municipal Association of Victoria, disagrees.

‘I think they need to do those things really well, because they are core local government services,’ he said.

‘That’s only a very small part of what councils do today.

‘It’s different to 100 years ago when councils were just servicing property, we now service people as much as property.’
