Councils left in the dark over possible Aboriginal land rights deal
Regional mayors want an urgent meeting with the state government amid reports a settlement agreement would hand Indigenous groups sweeping powers to rename all roads, bridges and public spaces.
Mayor of Buloke Shire, Alan Getley, says there’s been no consultation and councils don’t know what the agreement will mean for them.
“There is a suggestion that they would like Indigenous names on all our roads. Now, just remember, we have 5200 kilometres of roads in our shire and to put Indigenous names on all those roads would certainly be outside our budget,” he said.

“It would be very handy if you got us to the table as well instead of leaving us in the dark.”
The government insists the deal will not impact current laws and regulations – but is an “aspirational” list, of ways traditional owners can work with councils.
