Victoria has recorded 2005 new coronavirus infections and 10 deaths.

But news north of the border is also causing concern.

NSW recorded 5715 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, with numbers continually growing at a rapid rate.

That daily figure was 1742 a week ago.

Damian Ryan, a senior reporter for Nine News in Sydney, told 3AW Mornings said it was alarming.

“We’re told to ignore the numbers, but a jump in 2000 (cases) in 24 hours is something you can’t ignore,” Ryan said.

“The (NSW) government will be dragged kicking and screaming to do something now.”

He said NSW’s decision to ditch a raft of restrictions earlier this month, and reintegrate the unvaccinated, looked a bad one.

“When they turned the tap off in mid-December and allowed the unvaccinated into the community – it has literally gone pear-shaped,” Ryan said.

“I’m not blaming them, but the timing is incredible.

“It’s literally gone pear-shaped from that day.”
