An infectious diseases physician says Australia is likely through the worst of the current COVID-19 wave, and he’s got a positive prediction about the immediate future.

Professor Peter Collignon says the current wave of COVID-19 has “more than peaked” in Australia.

“I think we’re going down because even hospital admissions are going down and they tend to lag two to three weeks behind cases,” he told Neil Mitchell.

Professor Collignon thinks it’s unlikely we’ll see another major wave any time soon.

“There’s not another big variant on the horizon. There’s something called BA2.75 that really hasn’t taken off largely anywhere,” he said.

But Australia’s position will become clearer when the northern hemisphere heads into winter.

“The big test … will be what happens in Canada, the US and Europe next winter, because if they have a big outbreak, well we’re likely to have a problem next winter,” Professor Collignon said.
