Cow manure to be turned into electricity on a Victorian farm
Cow manure will be turned into electricity on a dairy farm in East Gippsland.
The state government-owned Ellinbank Smart Farm, has put out a proposal to market looking for someone to build a system which converts the manure to methane, which can then be used as a fuel source.
CEO of the Victorian Farmers Federation, Jane Lovell, says it’s “got to be a great thing for farming and for us moving to carbon neutrality”.
She hopes it’ll be rolled out more widely.
“We have to see how well that works and whether it can actually be commercialised,” Ms Lovell told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
“Perhaps five years into the future every dairy farm could have one of these digestors on site and it could be helping reduce their need for additional energy.”
