Cricket Australia and Governor General celebrate women in cricket

Sir Peter Cosgrove has told Macquarie Radio that he is committed to continuing to demonstrate the importance of Australian women in sport.

The Govenor-General has today announced the introduction of the Govenor-General’s XI match that will see some some of Australia’s most talented female cricketers take on the international touring teams.

The new initiative, which was developed by Sir Cosgrove in conjunction with Cricket Australia, will follow many of the same protocols at the Prime Minister’s XI match and incorporate senior players on the field mentoring younger players.

‘We hope we get a lot of people coming along to see really good cricket from great young athletes,’ Sir Cosgrove told Dean Jones, Tim Lane and Carl Rackemann in the Macquarie Radio booth.

When asked how he got the idea for the match over the line, Sir Cosgrove said that Cricket Australia leapt at the idea when he brought it to them.

‘Without their enthusiastic support, it would have remained a pipe dream,’ he said. ‘They’ve been beaut about this.’ 

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said he hopes the match will become an annual celebration of women’s cricket in Australia.

The inaugural Govenor-General’s XI match will be played on January 22 2016 at Sydney’s Drummoyne Oval.
