Wait times to offload livestock to abattoirs have blown out to months in some areas as farmers prepare for a tough summer.

A very dry forecast, low commodity prices and limited labour availability are putting strain on meat processing.

Chief executive of the Australian Meat Industry Council says there’s been a “huge increase” in livestock numbers over the last three years because of favourable conditions, but there’s “a crunch coming”.
