Cyber Security advisor to the PM says the Census was attacked not hacked

Article image for Cyber Security advisor to the PM says the Census was attacked not hacked

A government advisor says the Census was attacked by an unknown source last night.

Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Cyber Security, Alastair MacGibbon spoke with Tom Elliott.

‘We didn’t cover ourselves in glory last night, there’s no doubt.’

Tom asked Alastair if the ‘hack’ was from overseas.

‘Certainly traffic was coming from overseas’ ? he told Tom.

‘This was an attack, not a hack.’ ? Alastair told 3AW Drive.

He assured Tom there was no hack, all the data obtained from the Census is safe.

These types of attacks happen all the time and Alastair says they are a huge ‘annoyance’ to the government.

Alastair MacGibbon says this was a learning experience for all involved.
