Carl Williams’ family could have power to sue over Lawyer X scandal

The family of slain gangland boss Carl Williams could have the power to sue over the Lawyer X scandal.

His case is among hundreds which may have been tainted by a female lawyer who acted as a police informant – triggering suggestions he may have been wrongly convicted.

Laws were passed in 2015 preventing the Williams family specifically – and all prisoners who profit from crime – from seeking compensation.

But Greg Barns from the Australian Lawyers Alliance has told Neil Mitchell there is a possibility the family could receive compensation.

“It’s uncharted and dangerous territory,” he said.

“I repeat – it will cost millions, crooks will be back on the street and careers will end.”
