Darebin council is pushing to lower the speed limits in some of their streets

Tom Elliott

A local Melbourne council is looking to lower the speed limits in some of their residential streets.

Darebin council want to lower 30% of their speed limits to just 40km/h.

Dr Ben Rossiter, Executive Officer of Victoria Walks, has told Neil Mitchell that in 10 years we will be seeing 30km/h zones in a lot of high density areas.

Victoria Walks hopes lowering speed limits will reduce traffic and pedestrian trauma.

‘I reckon 95% of motorists do the right thing, when they drive down the streets they are going at safe speeds, around 40,’ said Dr Rossiter.

‘There are some idiots.’
