Day 1 blog: Second Test Australia vs South Africa from Hobart

Stumps day 1: SA 5/171 Quinton de Kock 28, Temba Bavuma 38, Lead by 86 runs.

In a humiliating effort Australia collapsed for 85 within 33 overs destroyed by a pair of quicks, Vernon Philander and Kyle Abbott.  An innings that had statisticians searching for comparable failures, Steve Smith fashioned an unbeaten 48 amongst the carnage.  Ian Chappell declared the captain was entitled to be quite furious with his team as he showed it could be done and no-one followed.

South African openers, Cook and Elgar, were solid reaching tea at 43 without loss. Following the break, the home side, along with the crowd, appeared more energetic and positive.  Mitch Starc quickly claimed the wickets of Elgar (17), Cook (23) and JP Duminy (1).  Josh Hazlewood took Amla (47) for the third time in the series and the skipper du Plessis (7).

The danger tomorrow is Bavuma will rotate the strike as Quinton de Kock accelerates to really make an impression on this match.

Tea day 1: South Africa move to 0/43 

‘You can’t win a Test match in a session but you can lose a Test match in a session, this is what happened to Australia in Perth’ says Barry Richards.  In the final overs up to tea, spinner Nathan Lyon was able to obtain some purchase in the pitch giving hope to the possibility of South African wickets in the last session.

Lunch day 1: It’s a tale of woe for Australia at 6/43.  

Barry Richards’s suggested the Australia’s are not playing to the conditions.  ‘They should be more circumspect’.  Kyle Abbott and Vernon Philander were able to take advantage of the pitch destroying Australia’s opening top order.  Surviving the opening session are Smith (20) and Test debutant Mennie (10), the only players to reach double figures.
