Day two blog: First Test Australia vs South Africa at the WACA

Cook and Elgar, old fashioned ‘take the shine off’ opening batsmen worked hard for their 35 run partnership before the lion-hearted Victorian, Peter Siddle, ended the innings of the struggling Stephen Cook.   Hazlewood backed up to take the wicket of Amla in the second innings.  A battle between the two left handers of Duminy and Elgar against Starc and Hazlewood rounded out an entertaining day marred only by the news Dale Steyn will miss the rest of the series due to a fracture in his shoulder.

Well we’re all square.  After being 0/158 Australia lost 10 wickets for 86 runs.  At (an early) tea Australia lead by 2 runs. As Dale Steyn left the WACA to have scans on his injured shoulder many considered South Africa in serious trouble, that’s definitely not the case.

Macquarie radio expert Tom Moody described the opening session of day two as ‘a wonderful examination between bat and ball’. A much straighter line from the South African attack forcing the commentators to question yesterday’s strategy.  

Shaun Marsh’s efforts to survive the day one barrage paid off.  Dave Warner fell to Steyn tantalising close to his 17th Test century and then Steyn fell, leaving the ground with an injury to his right shoulder.  What followed, as commentator Bruce Eva quipped was ‘a hamburger with the lot’.  Smith out in controversial circumstances and the 21 year old big quick Rabada has shown himself to be one to watch in the future, possibly not too distant future.
