Debate: Do modern councils need to go beyond ‘roads, rates, and rubbish’
Tom Elliott has long lamented local councils thinking and acting beyond their scope.
Tom would prefer they stick to their traditional roles, taking care of ‘roads, rates, and rubbish.’
But Kylie Warne from the Geelong Chamber of Commerce believes modern councils need to do more.
‘Ratepayers – and I include businesses in that – expect strategic leadership,’ Ms Warne said on 3AW Drive.
‘Disruptive technology has created a global space where regions are being caused to look further afield than their own backyard.’
