‘Delivering the most homes possible’: YIMBY lead supports big tax changes in budget
Heading into the May 2026 Federal Budget, significant reforms to capital gains discount and negative gearing are expected to be weighed by the Australian government to address housing affordability.
Lead organiser at YIMBY Melbourne, Jonathan O’Brien, says the reforms are a necessary step because the current tax system wrongly encourages people to treat houses like a gamble for profit rather than investing in things that actually help the economy.
“To have a serious conversation about the future of housing in Melbourne, all parties should be fighting to deliver the most homes possible for the most Victorians possible,” O’Brien said on 3AW Mornings.
