The right policies is key to reversing a steep drop in the birth rate according to an demographer.

Social researcher at McCrindle Research Mark McCrindle says due to over a quarter of adults choosing to not have kids, the replacement level needs to go over 2.5 kids per household.

“It does require some policy intervention … the baby bonus came in the late ’90s, that came in response to this pretty steep dropping of the birth rate,” he told Tom Elliott.
