Demon bombshell: ‘Ox’ Schwarz reacts to Goodwin gambling reports
The AFL’s most prominent reformed gambler, Melbourne champion David Schwarz, says drinking and gambling with players is “not a good look” from Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin.
Gambling at a pub with players is listed as one of the behaviours that prompted concern at club and league level about Goodwin in the lead-up to the 2021 season, amid a wide-ranging report by Mick Warner.

“To be putting it on front of young vulnerable men … I don’t think it’s a great look,” the former Melbourne champion said.
“He’s probably got it under control, absolutely. But … as a coach and as a mentor, and somebody that they’re looking up to and being guided by … I think he needs to distance himself from that sort of behaviour.
“I don’t mind him having a beer … but I think sitting down for a period of times and gambling with players, there’s got to be separation.
“He’s their boss, he’s their mentor, he’s giving them life skills and advice. I think most parents and most people when they walk into a footy club, they want their kid or their son to walk out a better person. So I think you’ve got to divorce yourself from that.”
