The Deputy Prime Minister has defended the government’s decision to hand out $300 to everyone in the form of a rebate.

Richard Marles says every Australian is facing financial pressure, and there are measures the government applies broadly.

“We’ve increased rent assistance two budgets in a row, that’s the first time that’s happened in 30 years, that is a measure that is much more targeted,” he told Jacqui Felgate.

“What we also need to be doing is making sure, that in framing this budget, we are responsibly managing the public purse,” he added.
