Detention of Asylum Seekers on Manus Island declared illegal by PNG
The detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island has been ruled illegal by Papua New Guinea’s Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court said today the PNG and Australian governments need to decide what to do with the 850 men, but they can no longer can stay in detention as it has been ruled as unconstitutional.
Tom Elliott spoke with the leader of the Greens Richard Di Natale who says we should settle refugees here.
It is suspected the 850 men would not be allowed to come to Australia, however the Australian government is yet to comment formally on the ruling.
Michael Pachi, political correspondent in Canberra said they would most likely have to either settle in PNG, go back to the country they came from, or settle in another country.
