Dick Smith wants to move Australia Day, but praises ‘best ad yet’

Former Australian Of The Year Dick Smith has again called for the date of Australia Day to be moved to a more inclusive date.

“We should call January 26 First Fleet Day – it’s a very important date,” he said.

“But I think if I was an Aboriginal person, I wouldn’t want to celebrate.

“Imagine if the Japanese had won the Second World War and had taken over this country and we European-Australians were supposed to celebrate the Japanese being successful. I don’t think we’d be that enthusiastic.”

He’s also lumped heavy praise on the latest lamb ad, a commercial that has certainly split opinion.

But not with Mr Smith.

“I think it’s their best Australia Day ad yet,” he told 3AW Drive.

“It’s fantastic.”
