Leading sports doctor Peter Larkins is skeptical of Maria Sharapova’s explanations for her failed drug test.

Sharapova revealed on Tuesday she tested positive to meldonium at the Australian Open.

Dr Larkins told Sports Today the situation has raised his eyebrows.

‘If I had a third eyebrow it would be up as well,’ Dr Larkins said.

?’This is not conventional treatment for irregular ECG heartbeats and magnesium levels.’

He said the drug has now been shown to be genuinely performance enhancing, and wonders if Sharapova was merely ‘ahead of the game’.

Gerard Healy said he was staggered that this would be the first we hear of an irregular heartbeat.

‘I would have thought that would come out to magnify the greatness of her achievements,’ he said.
