Energy Safe Victoria has told Neil Mitchell there is are significant safety concerns for dodgy electronics being bought online following a high number of recalls on electronics nationally.

Paul Searon, Director of Energy Safety said there have been a significant number of electrical recalls this year, largely due to overseas manufacturers not undertaking proper safety checks on their products.

‘You’re seeing a whole change in technologies where products are manufactured, back in 1998 there were probably three local manufacturers and a handful of suppliers and importers,’ Mr Searon said. ‘Now every second man is an importer.’

Of the eleven national electrical recalls this year, seven of them were hoverboards. There have also been incidents of phone chargers that shock, and LCD televisions that leak acid. Most of the products recalled were manufactured in China.

Mr Searson urged consumers to beware of devices and accessories that are cheap, and to exercise caution even when using smaller devices.

‘Electricity does kill even when you’re using a device.’
