Does a house sell for more if a celebrity lived there?

A buyers advocate says the fact somebody famous lived in a house is unlikely to add value to its sale price, but undoubtedly adds interest.

The issue was raised on 3AW after Tom Elliott noticed Julia Gillard’s former Altona home was up for sale again.

Tom was interested to know whether a celebrity home sold for more than it would otherwise, given its previous tenant.

“A lot of agents will advertise that somebody famous lived there, hoping it will bring buyers,” Nicole Jacobs said.

“But it brings voyeurs, if you ask me.

“A lot of people line up to try and see through the home to see how they lived.

“Sometimes, though, it also means less people get through because you have to be vetted to even get in the door.

“So that can make it a narrower market.”
