Dog owners are being urged to be extra wary of snakes after spate of bites across Melbourne.

Tiger snakes, brown snakes and copperheads are the most common species biting pets, with grasslands near the Yarra River, and Melbourne’s outer-west among the highest-risk areas.

Vet and practice manager from Direct Vet Service in Point Cook, Karen Davies, says snakes are a problem in the area.

“It’s an area that had a lot of pre-existing marshland and natural habitat for snakes so yeah, we tend to get our fair share,” she told Ross and Russel.
