‘Don’t agree’: Coalition ministers at odds over impact of home buyer plan
Coalition ministers are at odds over how the Super Home Buyer scheme would impact house prices.
Under the scheme, which will be enacted if the Coalition is reelected, first home-buyers can use of to 40 per cent of their superannuation, up to $50,000 to put towards buying a home.
Superannuation Minister Jane Hume this morning told ABC radio she “would imagine, in the short term, you might see a bump in house prices”.
But Housing Minister, Michael Sukkar, denies it’ll drive up house prices.
“I don’t think there’s any evidence to suggest that,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“We think it’ll be immaterial.”
NEIL MITCHELL: “So you disagree with your own Superannuation Minister?”
MICHAEL SUKKAR: “Well no, I agree with the Property Council who’ve said they don’t expect there to be a material impact. That’s my view as well. I don’t think there’s any evidence to suggest that.”
NEIL MITCHELL: “Hang on, this is a bit confusing. She’s the Superannuation Minister, you’re the Housing Minister, and you’re saying directly opposite things!”
MICHAEL SUKKAR: “I don’t agree with that.”
