Doyle the Demolisher goes whack over ‘the rockery’

‘It looks like a skin eruption that needs to be dermatologically removed.’

Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Robert Doyle did not mince his words when explaining to Ross and John why he wants to knock down the heritage-listed ‘rockery’ on Alexandra Avenue.

It’s estimated 46,000 cars go past the peculiar structure each day.

Built for Federation 114 years ago, it is described as a ‘naturalist-style grotto’.

But Mr Doyle had much more colourful descriptions for the landmark, which he says has to go.

The rockery is part of a review for a Masterplan for the Domain Parklands.
