Dozens of fire crews battle to control grass fire south-west of Melbourne

UPDATE

Dozens of walkers in the You Yangs have been evacuated, as water bombers work to extinguish a grass and scrub fire.

The half-hectare blaze is now under control – with strike teams called back in to help the fight from the ground.

It’s not believed any one was injured.

EARLIER

Three helicopters and more than a dozen fire crews are fighting to contain an out-of-control grass fire in the You Yangs.

A southerly breeze is pushing the flames towards the Ford Proving Ground, south-west of Werribee.

CFA crews also believe spot fires may pose a risk and have set up teams on Sandy Creek Road, near a tip site, in case smaller fires begin to spread.

Bulk water supplies are being sent to the scene.

People are advised to avoid the area.
