Dr Peter Larkins says there’s no doubt a transgender person will play in the AFL Women’s league
Leading sports medico Dr Peter Larkins says there’s no doubt a transgender person will one day play in the AFL Women’s league.
It comes after a transgender weightlifter won the Australian International women’s event in Melbourne.
Dr Larkins said if a court says you’re a woman, the AFL would let you play.
‘You can have an athlete that is not a pure chromosomal xx female but, again, the AFL has adopted the same principle as the Olympic committee,’ he explained.
‘If they’re legally registered as a female, the AFL are following that principle to my knowledge.’
Dr Larkins said while there was no legal issue, it was hard to argue against transgender athletes having a hormonal advantage.
