Melbourne drivers are paying a total of $1.8 million every day to use CityLink, as questions are being raised over the future of the toll road contract.

Average daily traffic on the toll road rose by 1 per cent over the past year while toll revenue went up 7.3 per cent.

Former Premier Jeff Kennett told Neil Mitchell there were certain stipulations in the contract put in place to protect the public if Transurban’s profits went over a certain benchmark.

He said he was concerned the Andrews Government was going full steam ahead to extend the contract, without reviewing the toll deal.

‘I am particularly worried about what is going to happen over the next 10-15 years if the government doesn’t test the existing contract and secondly, if the government doesn’t put major infrastructure projects out to competition,’ he said.
