Sportsday host Dwayne Russell and Caroline Wilson have reacted to the news Greater Western Sydney midfielder Dylan Shiel will request a trade to Essendon.

And both have differing views about what it means for GWS to potentially lose the star player.

Dwayne says he’s concerned the Giants’ premiership window has shut.

“For me it closes the window for the Giants, who are now in a bit of trouble. They are losing classy match winners, and they are losing depth,” he said.

“The good news is, Essendon’s premiership window is definitely opened. It’s opened wider than ever.

“The Bombers were already in the mix for next year’s flag I reckon, but adding Dylan Shiel makes them even better and opens that window.”

But Wilson said she disagreed.

“I still think the players they get back from injuries, and the players they’ve still got, I can’t agree with you that their premiership window has closed,” she said.

“Shiel was on a lot of money, you don’t know what they have got up their sleeve, in terms of the trade period and their own draft decisions.”

In a statement, the Giants say they are open to trade options.

“Dylan is contracted to the GIANTS for the 2019 season and he will remain a GIANT should a suitable trade not be reached.”
