Dwayne Russell’s impassioned plea to soccer fans on 3AW

Sports Today host Dwayne Russell says the time has come for Australian soccer fans to save their game.

He said the fan trouble plaguing the A-League was detracting from a magnificent sport.

While many have taken the opportunity to ‘whack’ soccer in the wake of Saturday night’s drama at Etihad Stadium, the 3AW commentator took a different tact during an impassioned editorial on Monday.

‘Most soccer fans are respectable sport lovers in this country and love going to, and adding to, a great spectacle,’ Dwayne Russell said.

‘But it’s time now – not for the media – but for the real soccer lovers to turn up the heat on the idiots ruining their A-League experience and giving their great game a bad image.’

He said it was too easy to blame the sport.

‘These guys are not soccer fans,’ Dwayne Russell said.

‘It’s wrong to call them that.’
