Neil Mitchell says Dylan Alcott is the perfect person to inspire and lift Victoria as the state comes out of one of the toughest periods in its history.

The wheelchair tennis legend, who has been named Victoria’s Australian Of The Year, has a well-documented journey that led to him becoming the first player ever to win a “golden slam” – all four grand slams and Paralympic Gold in the same year.

Alcott said he “bloody loves Victoria” and is a proud Melburnian.

Neil Mitchell asked him for his advice to those who were doing it tough.

“It’s our decisions, not our conditions, that determine the life we live,” Alcott said.

“We are all going through some stuff right now, that’s for sure, but we’re coming out the other side.”

Alcott spoke about his childhood growing up with a disability and how it shaped him to become a sporting great and one of Australia’s most positive people.

“I really used to hate myself, to be honest,” he said.

“I hated my disability.”
