East West Link squatters have had their electricity disconnected

The East West Link squatters have spent their first night in the dark, after power companies cut off the illegal connection to the Collingwood homes.

Police took back one of the Bendigo Street homes on Friday following the non-suspicious death of a man.

Two to three of the properties that were acquired by the government for the east west link are still being occupied by illegal squatters.

Citipower, having been informed the properties were illegally and dangerous hooked up to electricity, shut off the power around midday Sunday.

The Herald Sun reports the squatters could be heard screaming and shouting in anger.

It’s been almost eight months since the squatters first moved in as part of what they say is a protest to get more public housing made available.

The lawyer representing squatters in a Collingwood street says its disrespectful for the police, the Government and the Salvation Army to be talking about booting them out .

Meghan Fitzgerald from the Fitzroy Legal Service has told Neil Mitchell the squatters have a right to dignity.
