Up to 80 firefighters have been called to the scene of a deliberately-lit fire which has engulfed a factory in Tullamarine earlier this morning.

Press PLAY to hear more from police

It’s believed a car was driven into the two-storey building on Barrie Road just after 3am this morning, before it was set alight.

Firefighters escalated the response to the fire, which has caused significant structural damage to the factory, and a smoke warning has been issued for surrounding suburbs.

Nearby residents are urged to avoid the area, because the fire will impact traffic over the coming hours.

A crime scene is currently in place and an arson chemist will attend later this morning, with the fire deemed under control at 5am.

The fire has not impacted operations at Melbourne Airport.
