An elderly man, believed to be a hoarder, has been found dead following a house fire in Melbourne’s north-east.

MFB crews arrived just after 10pm last night to find the Mountain View Road home in Briar Hill fully involved by fire.

The caller to Triple Zero had stated an elderly man lived alone in the single-storey weatherboard home.

Firefighters were unable to rescue the man due to the ferocity of the blaze.

The fight was made all the more difficult by asbestos, a huge amount of junk in the house and the collapse of the roof at the rear.

It was declared under control at 10.45pm, when firefighters found the elderly man deceased inside.

Mountain View Road is currently closed between Sherbourne Road and Fernside Avenue.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
