A 76-year-old man has become the victim of an alleged carjacking near Geelong.

This renews calls for the government to introduce tougher penalties.

Police say the carjacking happened in broad daylight around 2pm at Norlane on Monday.

Two men approached the vehicle, they allegedly pulled the 76-year-old from his ute, stole his wallet and drove off.

The car is a green 2007 Hilux Tray ute.

Anyone who sees the vehicle registration 1BX 4DK is urged to contact police.

Shadow police minister Edward Odonohue introduced a bill to parliament last week that would create a new offence of carjacking and he’s urging the Andrews Government to get behind it.

‘We’re not living in Johannesburg, we are living in Melbourne.’

‘We need to send a strong message of deterrence that, that sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, it’s simply unacceptable.’ – The Police Minister told 3AW News
