The national advertising watchdog has backflipped on its decision to allow a controversial lamb ad to go to air, deeming it offensive to Hindus.

Advertising Standards Bureau CEO Fiona Jolly told Neil Mitchell the decision was reviewed after “several hundred” complaints were made.

“Complainants felt that the board had looked like it failed to give enough consideration to the importance that the Hindu religion places depictions of Lord Ganesha,” Ms Jolly said.

“The only issue was really about the ‘elephant in the room’ joke.”

Neil argued that Lord Ganesha is always depicted with an elephant trunk.

Ms Jolly said the ad can go to air if that particular part is removed.
