Imagine transporting to a country town truck stop or fish and chip joint in the south-east of Melbourne. For Heavens Steaks is just off Clayton Road on Centre Road in a strip of shops, and is a licensed steak sandwich joint, so you can have a beer and a sandwich over lunch.

I would say most people who come here come for one reason, they keep the menu small for that reason. People travel from far and wide for their signature steak sandwiches, they win the day every time.

This is not your average sandwich though, you can choose between the Clayton Classic single or Clayton Classic double steak and otherwise they come with the lot; provolone cheese, salami, lettuce, roasted peppers, tomato, cheese, egg (I added chilli, which I highly recommend).

Something about the addition of Italian flavours like salami and peppers with the cut through of the Aussie addition in an egg made it the perfect balance of both cultures.

There must be an agreement around Melbourne that these just are the superior rolls, because many a sandwich I’ve been trying recently has come with a similar roll – they’re essentially Vietnamese Banh Mi rolls. What that means is that it’s super light and fluffy bread on the inside, crispy and crumbly on the outside and BIG. Theirs is custom baked but I have a feeling they took a leaf out of the Banh Mi book. I can confidently say this is the best steak sandwich I’ve ever had.

Although you could grab a beer or specialty Italian soft drink my tip is that you must pair it with a milkshake (banana, vanilla, chocolate or strawberry), you can see the good old fashioned mega pump bottles of flavouring and they don’t skimp – they give you the rest of the milkshake that doesn’t fit in the traditional milkshake cup, the only way milkshakes SHOULD come.

You do have other choices if you’re not feeling steak sandwiches, we tried the tuna roll which was also paired with “The Lot” and was delicious but you can get the Italian sausage sandwich; single, double or steak and sausage.

Sitting at $17 for a single and $20 for a double steak sandwich, their prices have felt the rate rises like the rest of us but I can assure you it’s worth every cent.

If you’ve got any room left at all after that, take a short walk over to Moriah Street, still in the same strip of shops and you’ll find Marciano’s Cakes which are South American desserts.

I loaded up on a Dulce de Leche croissant, custard bun (creme pan), two massive slices of their signature cake and Alfajores meringue (Dulce de Leche between two biscuits covered in meringue) all for $20.
