Wharfies are “taking Australia hostage” with rolling work bans and strikes set to ramp up at ports across the country.

On Monday, the Maritime Union of Australia ramped up industrial action at DP World terminals in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle, and with further action planned, there are concerns shelves will be left empty in the lead up to Christmas.

DP World executive vice president for Oceania, Nicolaj Noes, says “it is about taking Australia hostage to a certain degree”.

He says salary demands are “significantly above what you see elsewhere in Australia” and those striking have a list of hundreds of demands which will “lower productivity and efficiency”.
