An expert in military strategy has given his assessment of the Russia-Ukraine war so far.

It comes as Russian forces continue to be frustrated by a resolute Ukrainian defence.

Former Major General and commander of the Australian Defence College Mick Ryan said Russia’s problems stem back to three assumption made by President Vladimir Putin.

“The first one was, he didn’t think Ukraine was a real country – the people and the President (Volodymyr Zelensky) have disapproved of that,” he told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.

“He thought they would roll over the Ukrainians – they haven’t.

“And he thought the west would not unify so quickly, or at all, to support Ukraine.

“All of these assumptions have been wrong, and therefore all their mistakes have flowed from these poor assumptions.”
