There are fears of a surge in mosquito-borne diseases in Victoria this year, with heavy rain leading to an explosion in the insect’s numbers.

Chair of ecological genetics at the University of Melbourne, Professor Ary Hoffmann, says Ross River virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in Victoria.

But it’s not the worst.

“Encephalitis, there’s a couple of those around and they can kill you,” he told Ross and Russel.

Professor Hoffman’s advice this summer?

“I make sure my backyard is incredibly clean — you tip out all the water … you make sure there’s no rubbish standing around.”
