Australia’s peak health organisations are calling on the ‘low sugar’ and ‘low carb’ labels on alcohol drinks to be removed because they are misleading consumers into thinking alcohol can be healthy.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has asked for submissions into its review of sugar claims on alcohol labels after health ministers raised their concerns about the labels being confusing.

Head of Food Policy at the George institute for Global Health Professor Simone Pettigrew says content claims such as “low alcohol” would be better messaging for consumers.
