Experts debate Labor’s move to trial monitoring devices for repeat youth offenders on bail

The state government has announced they will consider electronic monitoring devices for youth offenders who repeatedly commit crimes while on bail.
Secretary of the Police Association, Wayne Gatt says it’s a reasonable thing for the government to trial.
“I think it’s a sensible and pragmatic move, it’s not a silver bullet for youth crime or youth offending … but it’s something we don’t necessarily have available to us now,” he told Jacqui Felgate.

Former magistrate of the Drug Court, Tony Parsons, has revealed he’s against the devices.
He says he has grave concerns over the move.
“Once you bring young people, children … into the criminal justice system, you’re almost committing them to further decades in the criminal justice system,” he said.
