Experts reveal why financial incentives is not the fix for Victoria’s teaching crisis

Teachers are being offered financial incentives to teach at schools as the industry suffers from a shortage, but the government has received criticism for not understanding why teachers are leaving,

Shadow education spokesperson, Jess Wilson, says in the next four years there will be a teaching shortfall of over 5000.

“We’ve got an attrition rate of 20 per cent of existing teachers leaving the workforce, this is a crisis of the government’s own making,” she told Tony Jones, filling in for Tom Elliott.

The criticism comes after it was revealed teachers were being offered incentives to teach at a school in Greater Shepparton which is offering bonuses up to $80,000.

Former principal, Simon Dewar says the problem is a “lot more than” the money.

“Our teachers are required to do more administrative tasks, there’s more bureaucracy in the way, more compliance and it’s reducing the opportunity for them to do the work they absolutely love,” he told Shane McInnes, filling in for Tony Moclair.
