Experts warn against $20 over-the-counter sick leave certificates

The Australian Medical Association has warned against the use of $20 “Absence From Work certificates” for sale at Australian pharmacies.
As reported in the Herald Sun, the certificates, provided for personal or carer’s leave, can even be issued over the phone at the pharmacist’s discretion.
Peter Wilson, Chairman of the Australian Human Resources Institute, told Tom Elliott workplaces should not accept these certificates.
“We would certainly be advising workplaces not to accept sick leave certificates given by a pharmacist,” Mr Wilson said.
“A cough could be the early signs of influenza, emphysema or it could be made up.
“You need a doctor standing next to you to diagnose the symptoms.”
