Premier Daniel Andrews has this morning flagged serial killers will soon be unable to reapply for parole for a five-year period under a system overhaul.

The announcement comes amid concern from the friends and family of Paul Denyer’s victims that he is again attempting to win parole.

Speaking this morning, Mr Andrews said he’s moving to change the parole system because “I don’t want to see a situation where families who have been through unimaginable tragedy are lying awake at night thinking that person is going to be freed”.

But a close friend of Natalie Russell, who was one of Denyer’s victims, says the measures don’t go far enough, and neither she nor the Russell family have heard anything from the Premier.

“This is the first I’ve heard of it (the changes) which is a bit of a worry,” Karen told Neil Mitchell. “I’ve checked with the Russells this morning  … nobody has had any consultation.”

“They’re really, really disappointed, I think we all are.”
