Fans leave MCG before half-time feeling unsafe in ‘mob atmosphere’
A Geelong fan left Friday night’s MCG Richmond-Geelong blockbuster before half-time for fear of crowd tensions spilling over on public transport.
Anne* has lodged official complaints with both clubs, the Melbourne Cricket Club and the AFL after what she called obscene and intimidating behaviour.
“We felt unsafe.”
A neutral fan, Ben, later told Neil Mitchell he witnessed similar behaviour – “It’s the first time where I’ve been to a game and heard that many expletives”.

Anne said she and her daughter, aged in her twenties, felt unsafe.
“It was just just a mob atmosphere, it was terrible,” she said.
“We never leave a game early.
“Part of the reason we left early is we felt we didn’t want to be on the train – win or lose – with Richmond supporters.
“I wouldn’t want to be there with a young child.”
“The MCC have been excellent, and contacted me twice … just to say they’ll review what’s in the email.”
More to come…
