Farewell Peter O’Callaghan

Article image for Farewell Peter O’Callaghan

It is with very heavy hearts that we report Peter O’Callaghan passed away, Wednesday August 10.

A memorial service for Peter will take place at Fawkner Memorial Park in the Cordell Chapel – 1187 Sydney Road, Fawkner.

The service will be held on Monday August 22, commencing at 2.30pm.

Poco was a much admired, respected and dedicated radio announcer. He was a veteran of over 40 years, and presented on Melbourne’s 3KZ, 3MP, 3XY, 3UZ and most recently a highly regarded member of our Magic 1278 family.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, love of music and devotion to his audience.

His jokes during the Morning program and Elvis Hour on Magic will always make us smile.

He was 67.

Our love and thoughts are with POC and his family at this very difficult time.

WRITTEN TRIBUTES

Allan Peters

REST IN PEACE Peter you will always be remembered and never forgotten, it was a very sad day when you finished at Magic 1278 along with KJ and Rocking Ricky, I will cherish the fond memories of listening to you each and every day. To you family and vast number of friends and fans my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Keep spinning those disks in radio heaven Peter.

You will be missed.

Poco, you were an inspiration to many a great wit, a true professional and a thorough gentleman , one of Melbourne’s radio greats and a legend. RIP mate.

Pete and Lyn

Very sad news. Worked with Pocko at MP and Magic from ’98-2014. Terrific bloke and very professional always. We had a few beers together now and then and a lot of laughs. Gone to join sister Maggie.

Sad to hear the passing of Poco.He was truly one of the nice guys of radio who I had the pleasure of working with during his time at 3MP.
RIP Pete & my sympathy to his family.

Mike Lynch, Former 3KZ News Director

I had the pleasure of working with Peter at 3KZ from 1979-1981, first at the station’s studios in the Trades Hall Council building and then in Victoria Street. Peter loved being on the radio, this was evident by his warmth, charm, musical knowledge and wit that became the hallmarks of his broadcasting career. His unceremonious dumping last year by the idiots who run Magic 1278 was unforgivable, but thankfully those of us who worked with Peter will always have our memories a very warm and gentle bloke. Heartfelt condolences to his family

Loved listening to Peter with Richard Stubbs on the XY Zoo back in the 80’s on 3XY. Was always funny and was a great way to start the day. Was sad to hear the news. I met Peter and Richard back in 1987 as a 16 year old doing work experience at 3XY and found Peter to be a very warm, inviting man who brought you into the conversation and made you feel comfortable.
RIP Peter and thanks for the many laughs over the years.

Roslyn

I haven’t known Peter for very long. I found Peter to be a real gentleman great sense of humour & a lovely man . Rest in Peace Peter & thanks for the dances .Love from Roslyn xx

Peter was a joy to listen to with his soft velvety voice. His humour was dry and quick especially in his retorts on Secret Sound! One memory is when he back announced the Seekers song ‘I’ll never find another you’ saying ‘that was devoted to all the lonely sheep out there’!  I’m sure I speak on behalf of all ‘old’ magic listeners who loved hearing Peter’s exuberance in his job.
R.I.P. Peter O’Callaghan

I can’t believe the news that Poco is no longer with us. Poco and I first worked together at 7EX in Launceston….we spent many great hours again at 3MP….and reminisced over many beers about those days and how to fix what the ‘Clowns’ were doing to our great 3MP. Poco ever the Professional, a great way with words and the smoothest delivery ever.
Going to miss you mate….you had so much to give. I know you’ll get a great gig upstairs.

Nigel Carter

Vale, Peter. One of our favourites from our previous Magic radio station. Miss all of the great announcers that we had, Peter in particular, for his quick-wit, which never failed to make us laugh. ‘Those were the days’, wish they were back. Hope you get to still listen to Elvis whenever you can. One of my favourite Elvis songs for you, ‘Memories’.

To Peter’s loved ones, I am sorry to hear of his passing. Peter was a really good workmate from when we first met at 3MP in the late 80’s. Poco was always thoroughly professional in his career and good company to have around.
